We’ve done our fair share of boss bashing on RuinMyWeek, but this one…just wow.
One TikToker’s heartbreaking story about a dying family member is exemplifying everything that’s wrong with a system that puts capitalism over human life.
Hillary Zinks explained to TikTok that she had maintained a waitressing job in addition to her career working as a makeup artist for film and TV. She was on set in New Mexico when she learned that her sister was in the hospital, dying, and had been declared brain dead.
“My boss found out and she said, ‘Please, Hillary, go home. Do whatever you need…Life is not worth this job,’” she recalled.
As her sister was located in Las Vegas, Hillary had to hop in the car and make the grueling drive to try to get there in time to be by her sister’s side.
On the way, she texted a supervisor at her waitressing job to let her know that she wouldn’t be able to make her shift, and why. She was apologetic, but obviously wasn’t backing down considering the circumstances.

But the supervisor’s response was less than stellar.
The supervisor piled on further after Hillary replied, explaining why this was so inconvenient for her, personally, and the rest of the staff.

That was the last straw for Hillary, who went off about how that wasn’t her problem in the moment, all things considered.
And she followed it up by sending another text telling her supervisor to “eat sh*t” along with a middle finger from her comatose sister once she got to the hospital, proving that this wasn’t some elaborate lie she was making up to get out of work.
And yes, Hillary also used that text to quit her job.
After that horrendous back and forth, the supervisor did ultimately apologize, but Hillary found it to be underwhelming and failing to take responsibility for the things she initially said.
Hillary also shared text exchanges she had with a higher up supervisor, explaining the situation and officially offering her resignation.
She says that supervisor was much more understanding.
“I called him and the first thing he asked was how was my sister. And I said, ‘Well, she passed away that weekend. But she was an organ donor and she died a hero,’” Hillary said. “Over the phone, I could hear his heart sink for me. And I believe it sunk not only for my loss but for how his supervisor treated me.”
And he let her know that the supervisor she initially had the bad text exchanges with was no longer employed at the bar, something Hillary believes wasn’t solely because of what happened with her, but was related.
“Having her quit or get fired or whatever happened was not my intention. I just wanted her to take a step back and realize what she said to me so that she would never say anything like that to another employee ever again,” she said. “If she’s watching this, I do forgive you, and I wish you the best.”
