TikTokers Are Saying The Moderna COVID Vaccine Caused Their Lip Fillers To Swell

The COVID-19 vaccine is currently being rolled out and administered to essential workers and at-risk populations. As more and more people are getting the vaccine, we’re learning about its effectiveness and even some side effects.

During Moderna’s phase 3 trial, three volunteers who had fillers experienced post-vaccine swelling in their faces.

The three reactions were enough for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a warning to anyone with face fillers.

TikTok user @jujusparx reminded everyone about the side effect with an image of their very, very swollen cheeks.

While fellow TikTok user Paolo Perfeccion thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected plump and did not take it for granted.

Paolo uploaded a TikTok with the caption “Swollen fillers is the side effect everyone should want 😊💖.”

Doctor Roxy is a plastic surgeon who used TikTok to educate people on the vaccine and its side effects. She reassures TikTok users that out of 30,000 people in the phase 3 trial, only three had a reaction.

She then explains how the swelling can be treated using Oral steroids and Benadryl and that similar reactions have happened with the good ol’ run of the mill flu vaccine.

Dr. Roxy reiterates that the reactions are rare and should not deter you from getting the COVID-19 vaccine and treatment is simple.

Dr. Shirley Chi spoke to ABC on why this happens, and it all makes sense.

“Your immune system, which causes inflammation, is revved up when you get a vaccine, that’s how it’s supposed to work. So it makes sense that you would see an immune response in certain areas where they see some substance that is not a naturally occurring substance in your body.”

A revved-up immune system has a heightened awareness of foreign materials in the body. With fillers not occurring organically, the immune system goes into action.
