The so-called “Broccoli Gate” has become a big deal lately.
It started when TikToker @mimicarter81 posted a video where she bought some broccoli, but not before breaking off the ends, so she wouldn’t get charged for the extra weight.
That video got more than 6 million views and led to a lot of discussion online about the morality of doing such a thing.
Well, a Walmart employee (@n.c.lakehawk) weighed in on Broccoli gate and said: It’s totally fine. (Scroll to the end for the full video.)
She explained that customers do something similar to the cabbage — they’ll remove the outside leaves that they don’t want.
As for grapes, which are sold by weight, she said that shoppers will fill up lighter bags with extra grapes. All good, she said.
“If you only want a handful, you can get a produce bag and you can just take out a small handful because it’s sold by the pound,” she said.
As for broccoli, she said: “At the end of the day, cutting these off may only save you the cost of half a pound but that also adds up.”
But she said, go for it: “After all, that is Walmart’s motto: Save money, live better. Do what you gotta do.”
Commenters had a lot of thoughts on Broccoli gate.
Over the last year, food prices have shot up. They have risen 11.4 percent from August 2021 to August 2022, according to the most recent Consumer Price Index report.
So it’s no wonder that people are looking to save pennies wherever they can.
