A former Walmart employee came forth alleging that the company is using its self-checkout cameras to harvest personal information. Tiktoker and former asset protection manager @ashthetruth21 diverged her information to over 2.6 million viewers and counting. In her viral video, Ash noted that not only can the cameras take photos of you every time you scan something, but they also keep records of your card information too.
In the clip, she said, “So I had made a video about the cameras that they have that can see into your phone. Well, those ones at the register, they’re 10 times worse, my dude,” she says. “So, every time you scan something, it takes pictures of you and let me just tell you every time that you run your card through a Walmart scanner, they have a note of it.”
Ash explained that the self-checkout cameras are capable of “reading” your ID and credit cards from your wallet. She even went as far as to say that the company can locate you through your credit card. She claimed, “They can find you by your credit card. I don’t recommend using credit cards if you’re trying to do anything janky, my dude.”
With Walmart’s high theft rate only increasing, it’s not unreasonable that the company would progress to such extreme measures. However, some users were skeptical of the former employee’s claims.

Though her video received over 260,000 likes in support, many speculated on how it was possible for the cameras to “read into” a wallet. Others wondered what the point of having your receipt checked at the door is if Walmart’s self-checkout cameras have the data needed.
Viewers raised suspicion on the topic, but some were grateful for the information.
What are your thoughts on Ash’s claims? Do you think it’s possible that Walmart is harvesting customer information without consent? If you have any evidence to contribute, let us know, and be careful doing any “janky” things!
