Researchers May Have Discovered A Parallel Universe Because 2020 Isn’t Over Yet (25 Memes)

Researchers for NASA may have literally discovered the Upside Down in Antarctica when they stumbled upon what appears to be a parallel universe in which time runs backward.

The findings, which were published by New Scientist back in April, were made thanks to the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, a device designed to look for radio-wave signals in the stratosphere after being launched into a balloon. When the experiment failed to produce results following its third launch, the researchers decided to go over the data again—particularly signals they had previously dismissed as noise.

Though it wasn’t what they had been looking for, one signal seemed to be the signature of a high-energy particle. Though it seemed impossible, they found that the particle was actually exploding out of the ground rather than bearing down from the sky.

Typically, high-energy particles travel “down” from space and not up out of the Earth. Suffice to say, these particles are anything but typical. As it turns out, the pattern indicates that the particles were traveling backward in time, suggesting that they came from a parallel universe.

“What we saw is something that looked just like a cosmic ray, as seen in the reflection off the ice sheet, but it wasn’t reflected,” principal ANITA investigator Peter Gorham told New Scientist. “It was as if the cosmic ray had come out of the ice itself. A very strange thing.”

It’s almost impossible for laypersons to wrap their heads around what such a revelation entails—apart from what we’ve read in books and seen on TV and in film. However, based on works of fiction, the idea of a real parallel universe seems … not great?

And, as many pointed out on Twitter, so very, very 2020, in line with a global pandemic, murder hornets, and [gestures wildly] everything else!
