Have you ever noticed your cat freaking out around strange objects — like cucumbers or bananas or vacuums? Of course you have, because cats are total weirdos who live in a fantasyland we’ll never truly understand (and that’s why we love them!).
One human, Irene Olocco, from Italy, posted a picture of her cat (who happens to have THE cutest name, Lord Victor Fluffypaw) staring at the Christmas tree…from a safe distance. How can it be, you ask, that the cat is not attacking the tree itself? What a blessing!
Olocco devised a plan to utilize her cat’s greatest fear, the mighty tangerine, in order to ward Lord Victor Fluffypaw away from the tree. So she put tangerines around the perimeter of the tree (like a moat before a castle) to keep the kitty away. Genius.
As Olocco wrote in her post, which she shared to the Facebook group Powerful Cats Auraposting, “My cat is afraid of tangerines, so I’ve created a force field.” In the picture, you see Lord Victor Fluffypaw calmly sitting opposite the tree, probably furiously devising a plan of attack…while also making sure those testy tangerines don’t get any closer!
Interestingly enough, cats dislike the smell of citrus.
The Dodo interviewed Olocco about the tangerine shenanigans, and she said, “We were together on the couch, I grabbed a tangerine and, as I began to peel it, he hissed and ran away….I began to put oranges or tangerines on the furniture where I didn’t want him to climb on and it worked.”
People loved the post because, well, every cat owner has to go through the drama of protecting a Christmas tree (and let’s be honest, everything else in the home) from the cat.
But how long would the bliss and calmness last?
And would this preemptive move later result in revenge?
And was Olocco’s move just a little too harsh? Probably not. Any cat owner knows that Christmas time means a war between kitty and tree.
Next time, just use tangerines!
