Colton Underwood, who was the “bachelor” on The Bachelor‘s 23rd season, came out as gay—and comedian Billy Eichner was right there to tell the world he told you so.
A 2019 video in which Eichner joked about Underwood possibly being the first gay bachelor on the ABC show has gone viral
Folks are revisiting the clip in the aftermath of Underwood’s recent interview on Good Morning America.
The clip shows Eichner and former Bachelor host Chris Harrison talking with Underwood. Underwood asks Eichner about the criteria he looks for in a partner.
“The first thing I do, I’m gay. I know that’s a shock Colton,” Eichner tells Underwood before adding, “That I think you should look into.”
Underwood, who played in the NFL, laughs.
Then Eichner says, “Maybe you’re the first gay ‘Bachelor’ and we don’t even know. Put that on your promo. See you later!”
After news of Underwood’s announcement, Eichner tweeted the clip and shared his support for Underwood:
“I’m happy for @colton. If you’re gay, be gay! I’ve been gay forever & I love it!”
In the interview, Underwood was candid about how his mental health was affected by his refusal to accept his sexuality: “There was a moment in LA that I woke up, and I didn’t think I was going to wake up. I didn’t have the intentions of waking up. I think that for me was my wakeup call.”
Underwood also struggled with the woman he eventually chose on The Bachelor. Cassie Randolph found it necessary to file a restraining order against him after the two broke up. She claimed that Underwood planted a tracking device in her car and sent her “concerning text messages,” causing her to be fearful.
“Do I regret being The Bachelor? Do I regret handling it the way that I did? I do. I do think I could’ve handled it better,” Underwood said during the interview. “I just wish I wouldn’t have dragged people into the mess of figuring out who I was.”
