Katy Perry Shared A Candid Post-Pregnancy Bathroom Selfie As Her VMAs Look

Celebrity pregnancy culture used to be all about the “snap back.” Women who had just given birth were closely observed to see how quickly they got their pre-pregnancy figure back and all mothering and breastfeeding photos were glamorously lit by Annie Leibovitz and debuted in Vogue. Social media has changed all of that, as delirious mothers with full access to all their accounts can’t resist getting super real about what birthing and postpartum actually look like, even for the rich and famous.

Pop singer Katy Perry recently had her first baby with daddy Orlando Bloom. Little Daisy Dove Bloom was announced on Instagram, along with a partnership with UNICEF as Goodwill Ambassadors.

“We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” wrote the couple. “But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes. Since COVID-19 many more newborn lives are at risk because of the increased lack of access to water, soap, vaccines, and medicines that prevent diseases. As parents to a newborn, this breaks our hearts, as we empathize with struggling parents now more than ever.”

The couple set up a donation page on UNICEF to celebrate their daughter’s arrival. It’s unclear if they also donated? But I sure hope so!

It is unusual for a couple to have the clout to support UNICEF at a huge level, but what Perry is going through since birth isn’t unusual at all. This weekend was the VMAs, and while they were certainly different than usual under pandemic conditions, many celebs still dressed up and showed up. But Perry was dressed up for an at-home celebration.

She posted a story on Instagram of herself in postpartum undies and bra, looking very much like someone who just had a baby and is all out of f—ks to give:

The candor is awesome, but we must attribute the normalization of this post-birth realness to Chrissy Teigen, who brought us a photo of mesh underwear on Instagram not so long ago. Thanks for the honesty, ladies. We’re all too tired to pretend anymore.
