Comedian, actor, writer, and director Jordan Peele has been redefining the horror genre for a few years with his films Us and Get Out. Now, he’s treating us to his spooky version of Candyman, a 1992 slasher horror film about the urban legend Candyman, who freakily appears to murder you after you summon him by speaking his name.
Peele wrote and produced the film, while Nia DaCosta, director of Little Woods, directed it.
The 1992 version was, well, very 1992 — so we’re looking forward to DaCosta and Peele’s brilliant touch. Here’s the trailer, which you’ll want to watch and rewatch until the movie hits the big screen June 12:
The movie description goes into detail about the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood, which have been torn down and turned into gentrified luxury lofts. An artist in those lofts becomes preoccupied with the urban legend and tries to amp up his art career utilizing Candyman’s mythos. Of course, this invites…bloodshed.
Dare to say his name. #Candyman is in theaters June 12. pic.twitter.com/yanJYDmxHE

We love how Peele can take such a silly horror film idea and spin it so that the movie offers commentary on society. Here’s what people had to say…like WHY WOULD YOU CALL HIS NAME, THOUGH?

Still, many were psyched to see the trailer. We’re just not gonna be saying his name anytime soon.

The moment that stood out the most to me from the new #Candyman trailer is when the guy is being dragged and you can spot Candyman’s shadow in the background.
It’s beautiful, terrifying imagery that sticks with you. I’m excited to see how Nia DaCosta explores this in the film. pic.twitter.com/YkCC2gLpyV

🐝 @JordanPeele out here making “Say My Name” just as freaky as “I Got 5 on It.” Kelly, Beyoncé and Michelle will never sound the same. pic.twitter.com/2rIgX8nyWH

Beyoncé’s “Say My Name” getting the Jordan Peele treatment is something I didn’t even know I needed in my life.

But for real, people are actually scared of the Candyman legend.
I dare you to say his name.

I’m cool with not tweeting candyman 5 times. I know it’s not real but why risk it you know?

A good rule of thumb: Don’t say his name. Just don’t do it.
So do we know if the movie trailer voice over guy is ok since he said it last? Can’t wait for this.
