Memes don’t have to make sense. In fact, it’s often better if they don’t.
In the original image that kicked off the “Astronaut With Gun” meme, an astronaut regarding earth says “Wait it’s all Ohio?” while another astronaut turns a gun on him and ominously replies “Always has been” before presumably blowing his colleague’s head off to protect the secret.
The implication of an absurdly enormous conspiracy about the nature of the Earth was too good – and too akin to real life conspiracy theories like Flat Earth and Hollow Earth – for the meme lords to pass up.
