The “Dumbest Novelty Face Masks”—A Viral Thread (29 Pics)

The official stance on whether or not to wear face masks has gone back and forth from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic here in the U.S., but at this point, I think the understanding is that wearing one mitigates the risk of infection or passing the infection on. That’s what we want. There are a lot of places where it’s actually culturally normal to cover your face—polite, even. The U.S. is becoming one of those places, so get your masks organized.

While there has been a shameful lack of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers in hospitals due to government ineptitude, regular citizens have rallied and figured out more novel ways to cover their faces.

Writer Taylor Lorenz has been keeping tabs on the face fashions of today, and she decided to do a thread on the “dumbest novelty face masks” out there right now.

Though they’re supposedly stupid looking face masks, the first one she used actually looks awesome to me, so I don’t know if a bad novelty face mask is bad for everybody:

I do think that somewhere in this thread you will find the face mask that finally brings you around to wearing face masks, if you’re not already. Yes, a lot of them are stupid, but a few gave me a chuckle. Not that you’d be able to tell, because my face is covered. See if anything sparks your fancy. At the very least, it might encourage you to make your own, with a little more flair.
