We’ve been living with COVID-19 for nearly a year and there is still much we don’t know about the virus. People are clamoring for more information, and while scientists and doctors are working on getting us those answers, people who have experienced COVID-19 are sharing anecdotal accounts.
In April, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo came down with COVID-19 and many Americans learned about the virus’ multiple, mysterious symptoms while he did his reporting while sick. Because he chose to report his symptoms on air, people were able to get a first-hand account of the virus. Cuomo said he lost 13 pounds in three days, had horrible aches and chills to the point of chipping a tooth. For many, it was their first look at the mysterious coronavirus.
As the infection rate in the United States grows, more people are sharing their COVID-19 experiences to help others better understand what happens when you come down with the virus. One of COVID-19’s most mysterious symptoms is loss of smell and taste, and a TikTok user is showing how bizarre the symptom is by eating disgusting foods.
Russell Donnelly recently came down with coronavirus, except his only symptoms were loss of taste and smell. He calls himself one of the lucky ones.
Donnelly is a popular TikTok creator, with his videos racking up thousands of views pre-COVID-19 diagnosis. But it’s the wild tasting videos that sent him super viral.
@rustardlikemustard Covid taste testing. This is the craziest sensation. #covid19 #fyp #MyHobby #fineart
The first video received more than 13 million views and shows him chowing down on an onion and washing it down with a shot of lemon juice and a spoonful of garlic paste. In the video, Donnelly doesn’t flinch.
In his next test, he went with the torturous combo: toothpaste and orange juice. And couldn’t taste a thing.
@rustardlikemustard Covid test part 2 WASABI OREO up next. For now here’s this….#Covid #covidtastetest #MotivationMonday #fineart
He followed it up with the onion… from two days ago, as well as balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, and a lemon. He admitted in the video that the original post was taken down because he swallowed toothpaste, which is against TikTok community guidelines. Learn something new every day!
In part three, he combines giant wasabi globs with Oreos.
@rustardlikemustard As promised…WASABI. THIS FOOD IS DIFFERENT. Less fun than other foods. #waitforit #MotivationMonday #covid #covidtastetest #fineart #fyp #xyzbca
His fourth taste test includes chicken and gravy baby food sardines, mustard, anchovies with capers, and a garlic clove.

But for real, we hope his symptoms clear soon!
