We’ve all been through it — you open up a fresh bag of chips, already salivating, and there’s … lots of air.
Feels like a ripoff, right? That happened to Tiktoker @frecakes8 and he decided to do something about it. (Scroll to the end for the full video).
In a video showing him at the register, he writes, “Sick of paying for a full bag of chips but get 1/2 of bag.”
And then he did what we’ve all wanted to do — he opened a bag of Ruffles and poured it into a second, thereby creating a full bag of goodness.
He proudly showed it off. “One bag of chips,” the hero proclaimed.
Commenters cheered his ingenuity.
So why is there so much air in chip bags? It’s actually nitrogen and its purpose is to prevent staleness and protect bags from being squashed.
The process of filling bags with nitrogen is called called “slack fill.” So while it feels like a ripoff, there’s a real purpose to that empty space in your chip bag.
But still, it’s super discouraging to get a half bag when it feels like you paid for more. We salute this man and his courage (especially doing it right at the cash register)!
Here’s the video.
