COVID Myths Get Thoroughly Debunked By Pathologists In Viral Video (14 Pics)

There are two pandemics right now – one of them is viral and the other is a deadly strain of pure ignorance.  We see it in outlandish COVID-19 conspiracy theories that link the disease to 5G cell phone towers and Bill Gates. We also see it in the foolish and unscientific musings of people spreading misinformation about coronavirus as fast as their pixellated Facebook posts can upload.

The record needs to be set straight on some of these COVID-19 myths and theories and who better than actual pathologists who have spent their careers studying diseases?

A video of just that recently went, well, viral on Twitter in which Tech Insider asked two such experts, epidemiologists Dr. Stephen Morse and Dr. Syra Madad, to debunk 14 of the most common COVID-19 myths.

Here’s the video along with some of the most important takeaways.

1.

Expert verdict: Studies have shown that states where people more often wear masks have seen infection rates go down faster.

2.

Expert verdict: “CO2 goes through the mask quite readily. It doesn’t build up in the mask.”

“It does not cause carbon dioxide poisoning or toxicity.”

3.

Expert verdict: “We used to think that, but now we know it’s not true.”

“It’s also not just the kids, it’s the teachers and adults that are in these schools that are also at risk.”

4.

Expert verdict: “Asymptomatic people, people who look and feel perfectly well are contagious to others.”

“In fact, during the early days, that is when you are most infectious.”

5.

Expert verdict: “We have seen cases where you have individuals that have no medical condition, still unfortunately die of COVID-19.” (They also note that young people who recover may still suffer elevated stroke risk or other complications.)

6.

Expert verdict: “We still don’t know what long-term immunity looks like.”

7.

Expert verdict: “What we know about these virus particles is that they can still land on your mucus membrane even if you’re not breathing.”

8.

Expert verdict: “Bleach and other types of disinfectants are not to be used for ingesting, or injecting, or to put on the skin. These are corrosive chemicals, they can actually cause death and disability.”

9.

Expert verdict: “That is completely false.”

10.

Expert verdict: “Well here we are at the end of July and if anyone still believes that myth, I think we have plenty of proof.”
