Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell may seem like #CoupleGoals, but the reality is that they fight, bicker, and sort of hate each other—just like real couples! In fact, they’ve gone on record in the past to talk about the fact that they see a therapist and how they don’t believe in ‘The One.”
Shepard told Us Weekly in 2017: “We don’t believe in the fairytale…We are opposites and it has taken a tremendous amount of work and therapy for us to coexist.”
It’s actually remarkably nice to see a couple not tucked away in some unbreakable—and false—tower of power coupledom. And it doesn’t hurt that these two are hilarious.

But Dax and Kristen fight. And sometimes it gets dark.
Kristen recently revealed on Justin Long’s podcast Life Is Short that they’d had an “incredible” fight that was so bad they both “blacked out.” She slept on the couch, cried, and didn’t speak to him for three days. The whole thing was started by her leaving him a note — simple enough: “I left a note and I was like, ‘Hey dad! Would you mind taking the two towels in the dryer and folding them and then like one other thing…..He goes, ‘When you leave me notes, I feel really controlled.'”
What happened next? “A lot of volume, a lot of harsh words being thrown around, and it was an angry, angry fight about how nobody does anything for anybody else.”
While neither of them apologized, they did adopt a dog. “I got a dog,” she says. “This is so much better than an apology…We never talked about that fight ever, but I will say this: Every single thing that I have needed done or thought, ‘I’d want help with this,’ since that fight, he has been ahead of. I couldn’t complain about him if I tried right now.”

Here’s what people think about Dax and Kristen and their fight. It seems the Internet was seriously split—some people thought they were relatable and realistic…
Um…why don’t all couples’ fights end like this? https://t.co/RZtIQCwWmq

But a lot of people weren’t totally convinced that their fight was “normal.” In fact, they thought it was unhealthy and toxic.
Every time BuzzFeed or whatever cultural vulture site writes about these two as “couple goals 😍💑” they’re referencing those two talking about their relationship as if it’s a huge fucking burden and yet they’re praised for their openness on… how toxic and codependent they are?

This sounds insanely toxic

this coupling is some Fred Armisen shit that takes away from both being legit great actors and not just total honkeys

Some people even put bets on their divorce:
Okay I’m calling it. Within 5 years Dax Shepherd and Kristen Bell end up in a messy, semi-public divorce when she realizes/accepts that he’s a toxic abusive asshole.

Their marriage sounds so exhausting, even with the nice pictures & good times. I think Bell would be more fulfilled as a singleton than being with her husband. #KristenBell Just Said She And #DaxShepard Recently Had A Fight So Intense They “Blacked Out” https://t.co/lVkeZ4ZBQK

In the end, though, no one can know what their relationship is really like—and the reality is, love does take work. They’re just willing to be open about it!
