Kristen Bell Has An Excellent Reason For Not Sharing Her Kid’s Faces On Instagram

Being a celebrity almost inevitably means sharing some of your personal life with the public. That’s part of what keeps them interested in you and wanting to see more. This is especially true of celebrities who make their money off their social media accounts or brands, trying to sell home goods, or hair ties, or whatever. The line between bonafide celeb and influencer gets murkier and murkier, especially for celebrity moms who are often pressured to talk about motherhood and intimate family details.

Kristen Bell is very familiar with this dynamic, having been a famous person for years and years. She also has two kids, girls named Delta and Lincoln. While she talks about them a lot, she never shows their faces on Instagram:

Pictures of the girls are always obscured with fun emojis or other Instagram icons. Bell feels so passionately about not showing celebrity kids in public, she lobbied for a California law restricting paparazzi from taking children’s photos called “No Kids Policy.” It was passed in 2013. She even called up US Weekly directly to discuss it, and the magazine has since agreed not to publish children’s photos without parental consent.

She talked about why this had become such an important issue for her in a new interview with The Romper, even though she and husband Dax Shepard are very open about their personal lives, including details of Shepard’s addiction struggle.

“My feeling is that I chose a career in the public eye,” said Bell. “I chose to be quoted, I chose to have my picture taken. I don’t know them yet. I don’t know if they will want that. So I really don’t have the right to choose for them.”

So simple and yet so beyond the ability of many celebrity parents to understand. While many are protective of their kids, few acknowledge how posting constant face photos of a growing person might not be something they want living on the Internet forever. Save it for the holiday card.
