Twitter user @4ever_days unintentionally started a debate about an entirely separate issue when they asked, “Hello everyone! What’s the most physically painful thing you’ve ever experienced?”
There was one answer that kept popping up again and again, and that was childbirth:
Child birth

In this order
1. Childbirth 4 times at home one was 10.4#
2. Broken Ankle
3. Falling through a storm grate. 30 stitches 2 layers
4. Dry socket after a tooth pull
But really, emotional pain is the worst— mamamundo (@Mamamundo1) December 7, 2020
I’m with you. My son’s birth was a violent process. My friends were talking about their transcendent experiences and I felt I’d survived something brutal—and I had a sick baby. I had postpartum depression largely due to that, not hormones. It took a year + support to get over.
— Lisa (@LisaVery29) December 7, 2020
Isn’t it bizarre that our entire body is sliced open, and then just a couple days later they give you a new human and are like, “Off you go!”
— Melissa Downing (@Melissa_Downing) December 7, 2020
Having a baby does seem incredibly painful, though I don’t personally know. There were, however, many, many examples of incredibly painful things that really happened to people that were not childbirth and which sound like they’re much worse:
2 things. Gallbladder splitting open. 2 shots of morphine every 30 mins did zero. Did that from 3 pm to 2 am when finally got a bed. Nurse gave me 2 doses of Dilaudid. Finally felt relief.
Now after an injury I have CRPS. It’s ranked among the most painful of all med. problems

After I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed I had 4 dry sockets. Dr wouldn’t believe me that it hurt. Holy fuck, I hope no one ever experiences that.

Sorryz, but I gotta put an image of the Gympie-Gympie acid burn, the leaves of this plant are “soft and fluffy” hearts.
I eventually used duct-tape to remove the nettles from my skin, and still have holes.
Don’t use it for toileting purposes

The more people debated it, the more the childbirth discussion began to be about other things, like reproductive rights, or sexual health education, or even mansplaining:
Women sustain lasting health problems from childbirth, hypertension, nerve damage, PTSD from the process, and countless others. Women who had no previous underlying medical conditions now have one after a childbirth. So women should get the ONLY say in reproductive rights

How did the world ever normalize the sanitization and downplaying of childbirth?
Why it casually so expected from anyone with a uterus?
It’s an extremely difficult thing do. We need to stop taking it lightly.
It’s a HUGE fucking deal!!! https://t.co/eK9x0RvmmZ— beauty. spirit. light. (@EniolaHu) December 7, 2020
everyone thinks i don’t want to have a kid just because i am not a super maternal person but no that’s not the only reason.
a good half of it is the fact i never ever EVER want to experience pregnancy, childbirth, or post childbirth. ever. in my life. not for a fucking second.

I was already gonna adopt in the future but i was also gonna get pregnant i wanted to feel the experiences of being pregnant but after hearing the awfulness of childbirth i don’t think i can anymore pic.twitter.com/ZvaI4kiVsd

Childbirth is trending, and reminds me of a conversation that revealed that
a large number of men have no idea what happens to the umbilical chord after the baby is born.
(The “other end”, that is.)1: guesses are hilarious

Because the more you know about pregnancy/childbirth/child rearing you know beforehand, the less likely you are to do it.
My siblings are 10+ years younger than me. I saw my mother pregnant, and had to help take care of them. I have a dog.

I don’t know what I was expecting to see under the “childbirth” twitter trend but I’m definitely even more traumatized than before of childbirth.
I think I’m very happy with having furbabies. Forever.

And some people were just annoyed to keep hearing about childbirth, period. It is an experience that is different for everyone and while it can be very painful, it really varies.
It bothers me when people insist that childbirth is the most pain anyone can ever go through. Sure, it’s the most painful thing *you’ve* experienced, but many of us never experience it, and many experience worse. This weird insistence is honestly some variant of mommyjacking.
— siân ferguson (@sianfergs) December 7, 2020
I’m not talking about people who say “labour is the worst pain I’ve experienced” but rather those losers who say “well wait til you give birth!!!!!!” when you complain of pain due to menstrual cramps/breaking a bone/chronic pain conditions, as if it’s some universal thing
— siân ferguson (@sianfergs) December 7, 2020
I’m taking your word for it that giving birth was your most painful experience, but not everyone gave birth and of the ones who have, they could’ve experienced something more painful, and by the replies, they have experienced alot of things more painful than giving birth.
— 4ever DAYS (Miserable in Missouri) (@4ever_days) December 7, 2020
I’ve heard other women say this too.
— ProudMask-wearingNastyWoman (@janmjax) December 7, 2020
My first labor lasted two days and the second a bit less than 24, without pain killers of any kind. It’s hard but not nearly as bad as major surgery or infected nerves in the face.
— Doves ⏳ (@dovesandletters) December 7, 2020
Maybe the answer is that it’s not that useful to belittle anyone’s pain, whatever their circumstance. You don’t know how people are feeling and it’s probably better not to tell them to suck it up when they say they’re feeling very bad.
