Christen Nino de Guzman is a young woman who currently works for TikTok, but she got there after learning the ropes at Instagram, where she worked from 2017-2019. Christen started posting about jobs in tech on her personal TikTok because she gets so many questions from younger people about how to land these coveted positions. They’re usually high pay, good benefits, and lots of perks. I’m betting Christen is good at her job because her recent videos about her time at Instagram has made me feel totally jealous. And isn’t that what the ‘gram is all about?
She has now made a few TikToks about what it’s like on campus in San Francisco, but the one that went mega-viral is a Day In the Life as an Instagram employee. She starts every day with a shuttle to campus, which was apparently designed by the same people who planned Main Street in Disneyland. There are over 30 buildings there, so sometimes people have to ride their bikes from one meeting to another. There also seems to be plenty of outdoor space if you want to work in nature. But the big perk everyone commented on was food. Free food. Food, food, food everywhere you turn.

Well, good for Instagram. Hey, did you know that tech companies offer lots of perks like gaming and free food to keep you from going home? It has an overall negative impact on your social life outside of work, makes it easier to monitor people’s whereabouts, and infringes on break time, encouraging employees to work much longer hours for ultimately lower compensation.
Looks absolutely freaking delicious though and I definitely have FOMO. And there are even bigger perks, like getting to fly first class to international Instagram locations:

Christen is obviously psyched about her work in tech and clearly a lot of people see her life as aspirational for themselves, especially because she didn’t attend and Ivy League college and seems to have just jumped into it. She told Buzzfeed, “I knew firsthand how badly people were craving this type of guidance or advice because when I was living in Nebraska — where I grew up and went to college — it was really intimidating and almost unfathomable to think about moving across the country to live in a city like San Francisco to try to get my foot in the door at a big company!”
Now we just need a crossover episode about unionizing.
