Nature is scary.
And when it comes to things in nature that scare me, friggin bears are at the top of that list.
This viral video of a skier trying to escape a bear down the side of a snow-covered mountain reminds me of one of those nightmares where your legs are trapped in jelly and you can’t escape the monster chasing you.
Except it’s real.
ABC News reports the footage going viral everywhere was taken from a ski lift at the Predeal mountain resort in Romania.
In the video, you can see a black bear barreling after a man on skis.
It’s not easy to go down a mountain, but maintaining calm and composure so you don’t fall and become a bear’s lunch requires an enormous amount of skill.
It also looks like the people on the ski lifts were just calmly watching this man about to get murdered by an animal, but they were apparently yelling and whistling and trying to distract the bear.
“Uhh, no thanks.”
Ultimately, the man had to save himself with some remarkable quick thinking.
“He did a pretty cool move, which is a really safe one when you want to get away from the bear,” said skier Angel Somicu, who had seen the bear earlier in the day. “He dropped his bag off, and, well, the bear was dragged towards the bag.”
The bear was cause for alarm across the resort when skiers were informed that it was wandering around. Authorities scared the bear away somehow, and have promised to get it relocated to another area with less through traffic. Ion Zaharia, a police spokesperson in Brasov, Romania, told ABC News that they received three different emergency calls from people who saw it before this video was filmed.
“The skier did the right thing,” Zaharia said. “The bear was distracted by things inside his backpack. We are considering [trying] to relocate the bear, who should be hibernating now, anyway, but in recent years, we have more bears confronting skiers in the winter.”
Climate change is having some very unexpected repercussions.
