Taco Bell Potatoes Are Coming Back And Beyond Meat Tacos Are On The Way

If the first few weeks of 2021 seem like they’re already worse than 2020, remember that it was in August of 2020 that Taco Bell dropped Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes from their menu. F

or some inexplicable reason, the fast-food franchise seemed to be coming for vegetarians, shooting down popular veggie dishes like the 7-Layer Burrito, Spicy Potato Soft Taco, and Mexican Pizza, according to Buzzfeed News. Why would they do this?

There’s no real answer, though fans did immediately rally to create petitions to stop the end of their favorite dishes. This one for Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes has over 22k signatures. It reads in part:

We must save the potatoes for all vegetarians and people with taste who won’t eat taco bell meat. Please sign if you have a heart. 2020 has been hard enough, I can’t handle this. Help. This applies to all potatoes items. Don’t think you’re safe if you just like cheesy fiesta potatoes.

That’s right, nothing is safe, and never forget it! Not even our disappointment is safe, because in a sudden reversal, Taco Bell has announced that the potatoes are back starting in March:

In a nod to the conditions that have haunted us all, Taco Bell jokingly had their “CEO” give a message using the Zoom potato filter:

Spuds up there explained that Taco Bell had to streamline their menu because COVID put so much demand on their drive-through.

They also said that with the return of the potatoes, they’ll be “going beyond” this year, which means there might soon be Beyond Meat vegetarian options, too.

Though they obviously had the power to end our suffering at any time, people are still thanking Taco Bell like they’re the saviors of 2021:

Though there are some people who still remember what they were put through for delicious spuds:

And others are not willing to accept this one concession. There are a lot of vegetarian dishes that we are still waiting for.

My suspicion is that the company knew exactly how much people would freak out over the loss of potatoes and Mexican pizza, and decided to take it away just to give it back—like dangling a carrot. I say, learn to make these potatoes at home. It’s called survival.
