TikTok User Accused Of Whitewashing Her Boyfriend After Participating In Viral Trend

For those who are unfamiliar, whitewashing is to alter anything’s original appearance or intent to cater to white people. There are countless examples and major ones often have to do with Hollywood casting. A famous one is the white Mickey Rooney portraying an Asian man in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. More recent examples include Scarlett Johansson’s casting as an Asian character in The Ghost in the Shell and Matt Damon in The Great Wall, which encourages the racist trope that only a white person can save another culture.

Now that we have whitewashing established, let’s get into the most recent controversy: TikTok user @millville_.

The account only has three videos, with one of them getting a lot of attention for a bad reason. In the video, the user is participating in a popular TikTok trend where you post a picture of your significant other before you started dating and then a pic of them now.

Here is the “before” pic.

And here is the “after,” which is the “whitewashing” pic.

TikTok users noticed something peculiar about the before and after images.

One user commented “Colonized, gentrified, terrified. Free bro.” And another said “Why he look so edited?”

The post caused so much chatter that it made its way over to Twitter.

And there were a lot of Get Out references happening over there.

After the whitewashing accusations, the TikTok user posted a follow-up video, saying “He is who he wants to be. He’s proud of himself. I’m proud of him.”

Shortly after the video posted, all posts were taken down from the account.
