Viral TikTok Guy With A Freakishly Long Thumb Explains His, Uh, “Gift”

It’s great when the internet surprises instead of horrifies you, though reactions are mixed to viral TikTok sensation Jacob Pina.

Jacob has a very special and specific talent and I’ve personally never seen anything like it: as if by magic, he can grow his thumb from about two inches to five. Thank you, TikTok, for making this totally random talent available to all of us.

Not everyone is responding with gratitude and a childlike sense of wonder to Jacob’s extendo-thumb. Some people are disgusted, especially because the trick is audible (it involves his ability to disconnect his thumb from the socket). It sort of sounds like a bone in the garbage disposal.

It kind of reminds me of how Wolverine’s hand knives make a sound like a sword coming out of a scabbard, except this sound actually makes sense. And Jacob has been compared to a Marvel Mutant (as a compliment, I think) but he doesn’t seem entirely convinced that Professor X would have him:

He’s probably right that there aren’t too many practical uses for a disconnected thumb, mainly because it must lack structural integrity. He probably can’t even pick up a grocery bag with that or open a car door.

Jacob did tell Buzzfeed in an interview that the thumb doesn’t hurt and doesn’t seem to mean anything dangerous for him. He discovered his ability in middle school and has had it checked out.

“I just dislocate my thumb, by forcing it out of its socket, to make it appear longer,” he explained. “My doctor says it’s abnormal but can’t officially link it to any known medical conditions.”

He’s also been doing it long enough to not think people would react the way they have.

“When I posted my first video to TikTok, I had no clue I’d get this sort of attention from it. People have mixed reactions, like disgusted, freaked out, or curious,” he said.

Thank you for being so generous with your gift, Jacob. I just want to feel again, and watching your TikToks made that happen.
