Couple Sends “Non-Invitations” To Wedding With A Money Request For Their Honeymoon

Wedding etiquette used to be pretty clear, but amongst what will one day be called the Cash Grab Generation, every occasion is an occasion to hit people up for money. That’s not completely weird: when you go to a wedding, it’s expected that you bring a gift or, yes, cash, especially if it’s a young couple getting a start in life. But a lot of couples are marrying later and probably don’t need the coffee grinder or KitchenAid. They still have expectations and “honeypots” or fund collections for trips or homes have become more normalized.

That still doesn’t entirely explain this card posted by Redditor u/sar0025 to r/WeddingShaming under the title, “We sent you this card so send us money.” The card conveys so much in just a few sentences. It starts:

“As much as we would love for you to attend, sadly, our venue can not accomodate[SIC] everyone. We are sure to keep you in our hearts in this celebration of love.”

Hey, fair enough. Weddings can be expensive and sometimes people have to keep them smaller than they would like. Nice to be notified of an impending marriage so you’re not surprised when you see the pics on Facebook

But it didn’t stop there. Below, the card reads, “If you would like to congratulate the bride and groom, rather than a registry, they are accepting money to aid in a beautiful honeymoon.”

I’m just imagining what they thought the reaction to this would be. A bunch of people reading it and saying to themselves, “Oh, your honeymoon will be beautiful? I gotta get in on that action! Take all my money, people who didn’t include me in the biggest day of their life.”

Since the image was shared to a subreddit dedicated to shaming tacky people with no taste who are getting married, the comments are pretty scornful. A lot of people had suggestions for what they would say to someone who came around asking for money after specifically not including them in the wedding.

User Oburcuk wrote, “Why do people think anyone else gives a sh—t about their honeymoon? Everyone is struggling, so if you can’t afford to have a big wedding, don’t! The entitlement is mind-boggling.” And they get angrier from there:

The reality is that people ask for money because they know there are some folks out there who will give it to them and they don’t care how many bridges they burn trying to get it. Hope the marriage lasts, because you’ll have fewer people to turn to if couplehood doesn’t work out.
